Madhubani Painting

Madhubani painting, also known as Mithila art, is one of Bihar’s most treasured artistic traditions. Originating in the Mithila region, this folk art form has been practiced for centuries, primarily by women, as a means of storytelling and cultural expression.

These paintings are characterized by intricate patterns, bold colors, and themes inspired by mythology, nature, and daily life. Artists use natural dyes and handmade brushes, ensuring that the craft remains eco-friendly and authentic. Traditionally, Madhubani paintings were created on walls and floors of homes, especially during festivals and special occasions, but today, they are also done on canvas, cloth, and paper, gaining worldwide recognition.

The themes of Madhubani art often depict Hindu deities like Lord Krishna, Lord Rama, and Goddess Durga, as well as elements of nature such as fish, peacocks, and trees, symbolizing prosperity and harmony.

With its geometrical precision and storytelling approach, Madhubani painting has become a symbol of Bihar’s artistic excellence. Today, it is not just a traditional craft but also a globally admired art form, with artists from Bihar showcasing their work in exhibitions and museums worldwide.
